The No Lawn Garden
A garden design without lawn can make for a more plant and habitat rich space.
Doing away with the monoculture of turf and creating paths that function as all-weather entertaining spaces can make for a garden that leads you to hidden seating destinations through the gentle brush of grasses and fragrant sub shrubs.
Before its re-design, this garden in Blackheath had a square-ish central lawn with a thin strip of planting around the fence line.
After, planting is throughout the garden, with generous paths leading to a hidden sunlounge, a dining area and a second seating area for morning coffee.
Two paving materials were chosen in a pared-back dark palette. Dark clay paviours and a larger format to complement and contrast.
A bijou courtyard needs even more design care and attention.
There is nowhere to hide in a small courtyard garden design. Every corner is on show. That means making every elements work.
The paving here is a beautiful considered Belgian paver, porous to soak away rainfall.
The entire space is divided into three private areas - one for a solo sunlounger, one for seating and one for dining.
Plants work hard to divide the space. Tall grasses and shrubs with year round interest divide the space.
Wildlife will find still water, fallen leaves and diversity in plant selection.
